Every resort on this list is beautiful. Every one of them has couples leaving five-star reviews on TripAdvisor. That is not what this guide is about.
This is a photographer's evaluation — written after 12 years and 400+ weddings across Cancún, the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. I'm not rating the food, the spa, or the room size. I'm rating what actually determines how your wedding photographs will look: the ceremony venues, the portrait locations, the quality of light, and the logistical reality of working in each property.
And before the resort-by-resort breakdown, I want to share the single most important piece of advice I give every couple — regardless of where they're getting married:
"Schedule your ceremony to end at least 90 minutes before sunset. Then use that window for couple portraits in golden hour light. This one decision makes more difference to your final gallery than the resort, the venue, the florals, or anything else."
I've photographed at the most stunning venues in the Riviera Maya with the ceremony ending at 6pm — in full overhead tropical sun, with zero golden hour left. The photos were technically fine. They were not extraordinary. The couples who build golden hour into their timeline always have the most cinematic, emotional, and timeless galleries. Always.
Golden Hour Timing by Season — Cancún & Riviera Maya
Plan your ceremony to end at least 90 minutes before sunset. These are the target ceremony end times by season:
Nov – Jan

Hyatt Ziva Cancún
Cancún Hotel Zone · Adults & Families
Hyatt Ziva Cancún. © Víctor Herrera Photography
The Hyatt Ziva Cancún sits at the tip of the Hotel Zone, surrounded by ocean on three sides. That geography gives you something rare: ceremony locations that face the Caribbean directly, with no buildings or structures cutting into the horizon. For photography, it means open sky, consistent light, and the kind of blue backdrop that makes every image feel like it was made somewhere very special.
The resort has multiple ceremony venue options — from intimate gazebos to open beachfront terraces — and the grounds offer excellent variety for portrait sessions. It's a resort I return to often, and one I recommend without hesitation to couples who prioritize photography alongside the experience.
Photographer's tip
The ocean-facing terrace locations at the tip of the property give you 270° of sky and water. Plan your ceremony here and end by 4:00 PM in winter — the light that arrives at 4:30 at this location is among the best I've seen anywhere in the Hotel Zone.
Fiesta Americana Condesa Cancún
Cancún Hotel Zone · All Ages

The Fiesta Americana Condesa is one of the most recognizable properties on the Cancún strip — its curved architecture and beachfront position make it a consistent backdrop for beautiful ceremony photography. It's a well-established wedding venue with experienced coordination staff, which makes the day run smoothly for everyone involved.
From a photography standpoint, the beach ceremony locations face west, which means afternoon and golden hour light arrives directly on the couple during the ceremony itself — a significant advantage over resorts where the ceremony faces east or is blocked by buildings.
Photographer's tip
The west-facing beach is your biggest asset here. A late afternoon ceremony ending around 4:30–5:00 PM gives you beautiful light during the vows and a golden hour portrait window immediately after. Don't waste it on cocktail hour — step away for 20 minutes of portraits first.
Royalton Riviera Cancún
Riviera Cancún · All Ages · Modern Design

The Royalton Riviera Cancún appeals to couples in their 20s and 30s who want a modern aesthetic with a full all-inclusive experience. Its contemporary architecture photographs cleanly — strong lines, white surfaces, and a beachfront position that produces consistent, well-lit ceremony images.
It's a mid-to-large resort with active energy, which can be a plus for couples who want their guests to have an exceptional stay alongside the wedding experience. The wedding coordination team is experienced and efficient, which helps the day flow well.
Photographer's tip
The pool deck areas offer some of the best portrait backdrops at this property — clean, modern, and with excellent depth toward the ocean. Combine with beach portraits during golden hour for a gallery that feels both contemporary and timeless.
Breathless Riviera Cancún
Puerto Morelos · Adults Only · Lively Atmosphere

Breathless draws couples who want an adults-only resort with an energetic, social atmosphere. The property is well-designed for weddings — multiple outdoor ceremony locations, strong event coordination, and a beach that photographs beautifully in late afternoon light.
What I appreciate about Breathless from a photography standpoint is the variety of backdrops available within a relatively compact property. You can move efficiently between the ceremony beach, the pool deck, and the garden areas during portrait time without losing significant minutes to resort navigation.
Photographer's tip
The garden and pool areas between the beach and the main building are often overlooked but produce some of my favorite portraits at this property — lush, textured, and lit beautifully in late afternoon. Don't skip them in favor of staying on the beach for the entire portrait session.
Excellence Playa Mujeres
Playa Mujeres · Adults Only · Luxury
Excellence Playa Mujeres. © Víctor Herrera Photography
Excellence Playa Mujeres is, from a pure photography standpoint, one of the strongest venues anywhere in the Cancún area. The pier ceremony location extends over the water — the couple stands surrounded by the Caribbean on both sides, with an open sky horizon in every direction. It creates images that genuinely cannot be replicated at any other property.
The adults-only atmosphere means a calmer, more elegant environment on your wedding day. The resort is smaller than some competitors, which is an advantage — you can move between portrait locations quickly, leaving more time for images and less time walking.
Photographer's tip
The pier location is the strongest ceremony backdrop I've photographed in the Hotel Zone and Playa Mujeres area. If it's available for your date, prioritize it. Plan your ceremony to end by 4:30 PM — the light that arrives at 5:00 PM at this north-facing location in the off-peak season is extraordinary.
Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen · All Ages · Urban Beach
Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen. © Víctor Herrera Photography
The Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen offers something none of the Cancún resorts can: a beachfront wedding venue that is literally steps from the energy and nightlife of 5th Avenue and the streets of Playa del Carmen. For couples who want their wedding to feel like a complete destination experience — ceremony on the beach, dinner by the ocean, then dancing in one of the best beach towns in Mexico — this resort is the natural choice.
Photographically, the resort has a boutique scale that I appreciate. Everything is close together, which means efficient portrait sessions. And the streets of Playa del Carmen are available as an extension of the portrait session — something unique to this location that no other resort on this list can offer.
Photographer's tip
Build 20–30 minutes into your portrait session to walk into Playa del Carmen's streets — the colonial facades, colored walls, and vibrant energy create images that contrast beautifully with the beach ceremony. The combination of beach and city in one gallery is a signature of this location that couples love when they see their final images.
Iberostar Paraíso
Playa Paraíso · All Ages · Grand Scale
Iberostar Paraíso, Riviera Maya. © Víctor Herrera Photography
The Iberostar Paraíso complex is one of the most popular destinations for large-group weddings in the Riviera Maya. Its scale means it can handle guest lists of 100, 200, or more without feeling crowded, and the resort offers a wide variety of ceremony and reception locations that suit different styles and budgets.
For photography, the lush tropical gardens throughout the property are exceptional. Unlike some resorts where portraits happen on manicured lawns with little visual interest, the Iberostar Paraíso gardens have depth, texture, and natural framing that makes portrait work feel genuinely cinematic.
Photographer's tip
The resort is large — transportation between venues takes real time. Share your ceremony and portrait locations with your photographer at least two weeks before the wedding so we can map the most efficient route. Losing 20 minutes to resort navigation during golden hour is one of the most common preventable issues at large properties like this one.
Moon Palace Cancún
Riviera Cancún · All Ages · Mega Resort
Moon Palace is one of the most frequently booked wedding resorts in the entire Cancún-Riviera Maya corridor — and for good reason. Its scale is extraordinary: multiple ceremony locations, multiple reception ballrooms, a mile of private beach, and facilities that can accommodate virtually any guest count. For couples planning large weddings of 100+ guests, it is one of the few properties in the region that can genuinely deliver without compromise.
Photographically, the ocean-facing ceremony locations produce strong images, and the grounds offer excellent variety for portrait sessions. The key challenge at Moon Palace is the same as at all mega-resorts: size. Factor transportation time between venues into your timeline so portrait time doesn't get eroded.
Photographer's tip
Confirm your portrait locations with your photographer before the wedding day and identify the fastest route between ceremony and portrait spots. Moon Palace is beautiful — but losing 30 minutes to logistics at a resort this size during golden hour is a real risk without prior planning.
Aventura Palace
Riviera Maya · All Ages · Family Friendly
Aventura Palace is a consistently popular choice for families with mixed-age guest lists. The resort accommodates everyone — children and adults — without sacrificing the wedding experience. Its beachfront ceremony locations and tropical garden settings produce reliable, beautiful wedding photography in experienced hands.
Photographer's tip
The garden areas adjacent to the beach offer some of the most lush and layered portrait backdrops at this property. Don't limit portraits to the beach alone — the garden-to-beach combination gives your gallery more visual variety.
Now Jade Riviera Cancún
Puerto Morelos · All Ages · Mid-Scale
Now Jade is a mid-scale, family-friendly resort with a strong wedding program and a loyal following among couples from the US and Canada. The beach ceremony locations face west, meaning late afternoon and golden hour light arrives directly on the couple — a structural advantage that many couples don't think about when choosing a venue but that I notice immediately as a photographer.
Photographer's tip
West-facing beach ceremonies are a significant photographic advantage. Lean into it: plan your ceremony for late afternoon and let the light do the work. Your gallery will thank you.
Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa
Tulum · All Ages · Natural & Lush
Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa. © Víctor Herrera Photography
Dreams Tulum is the most visually distinctive resort on this list. Where most Cancún and Riviera Maya resorts offer manicured beaches and clean architecture, Dreams Tulum is surrounded by dense, wild tropical jungle. The canopy overhead creates dappled, natural light that is extraordinarily flattering. The beach here is quiet and pristine. The entire atmosphere feels genuinely removed from the commercial resort world — intimate, lush, and cinematic.
For couples who want wedding photographs that look different from every other Cancún wedding — who want something that feels wild, organic, and deeply of its place — Dreams Tulum consistently delivers one of the most distinctive galleries available in the region.
Photographer's tip
The jungle-to-beach transition at Dreams Tulum is unique. Start portraits in the jungle canopy where the dappled light creates extraordinary texture, then move to the beach for the golden hour. The contrast between the two environments in a single gallery creates a visual narrative that no other resort on this list can match.
The One Thing That Matters More Than the Resort
Every resort on this list will give you a beautiful wedding. The difference between a beautiful gallery and an extraordinary one — at any of these properties — comes down to two things: your photographer and your timing.
The photographer you choose determines the creative vision, the emotional intelligence, the ability to anticipate and capture moments that define your day. The timing you protect — the 90-minute golden hour window before sunset — determines the quality of light in which those moments are captured.
I've photographed stunning weddings at modest venues and average weddings at exceptional ones. The resort is the stage. What happens on it is what matters.

What is the best resort for a wedding in Cancún in 2026?
It depends on your priorities. For photography, the Hyatt Ziva Cancún and Excellence Playa Mujeres are exceptional. For energy and proximity to Playa del Carmen's nightlife, the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen is outstanding. For intimacy and natural surroundings, Dreams Tulum is one of the most visually distinctive venues in the region.
What is the most important factor for great wedding photos at any Cancún resort?
Timing. Schedule your ceremony to end at least 90 minutes before sunset so couple portraits happen during golden hour. This single decision makes more difference to the final gallery than the resort, the venue, or any other factor.
Which Cancún resort is best for wedding photography specifically?
From a photographer's perspective, Excellence Playa Mujeres and Hyatt Ziva Cancún are the strongest — both offer exceptional light, open ceremony locations, and efficient portrait variety. Dreams Tulum is the most cinematically distinctive resort in the region for couples who want something visually unique.
Is Moon Palace good for a wedding?
Yes — Moon Palace is one of the most capable resorts in the region for large weddings. Multiple ceremony venues, extensive grounds, and ocean-facing locations make it a strong choice. The key is working with a photographer who knows the property and can navigate it efficiently to protect golden hour portrait time.
Can I hire my own photographer at any Cancún resort?
Yes. Virtually all Cancún and Riviera Maya resorts allow external photographers with payment of a vendor day-pass fee, typically $150–$500 USD. Confirm the specific policy and amount with your resort's wedding coordinator. A professional photographer will always inform you of this cost upfront.
What time should I schedule my wedding ceremony in Cancún for the best photos?
Schedule your ceremony to end at least 90 minutes before sunset. In Cancún that means ending by approximately 4:00 PM in November–January, 4:45 PM in February–April, and 5:30 PM in May–August. This secures the golden hour window for couple portraits — the most flattering and cinematic light of the entire day.
