Peak Season — Dry & Clear
The most reliable window. Temperatures 22–28°C, minimal rain, clearest skies and Caribbean water of the year. The northeast trade winds create a refreshing breeze that also moves veils and florals beautifully in photographs. Sunrise early (before 7am) — ideal for morning ceremonies. Sunset around 5:30–6pm. Book 12–18 months in advance.
Extended Dry Season — Longer Golden Hours
Temperatures rise toward 32°C but conditions remain reliable. Sunset extends to 7:00–7:30pm by May — the longest golden hour windows of the year. Sea is warmest and most vivid. Some sargassum risk begins on open Caribbean beaches from May onward — the protected Mahahual-Xcalak coastline tends to be more resistant than Hotel Zone beaches. Mahahual faces northeast — which means the morning light hits the beach directly and the afternoon/evening light creates warm, directional golden hour conditions from a different angle than most Hotel Zone beaches. 📸 How I photograph weddings and portrait sessions in Mahahual
The Mahahual Lighthouse as anchor. Regardless of where the ceremony takes place, I always build a portrait route that passes the lighthouse at some point during the golden hour window. The 19th-century structure, the Caribbean behind it, the coral beach underfoot — this is a location that belongs to Mahahual and nowhere else. It reads as genuinely historic and genuinely wild simultaneously. Twenty minutes here produces images that could not have been made anywhere else.
The reef water portraits. The specific turquoise clarity of the water in front of the reef creates a backdrop in shallow water portraits — feet in the water, fabric catching the surface, the color behind — that no other destination in Mexico offers at the same visual intensity. I specifically plan portrait time at water level for this reason.
The jungle edge at dawn or dusk. The transition between Caribbean jungle and beach in Mahahual is unlike anything in the Hotel Zone. At dusk or dawn, the light filters through the palms and mangroves at the beach edge with a warm, atmospheric quality that produces images with extraordinary tonal depth. Portrait sessions along the jungle-beach transition, particularly at Hayhu where the jungle comes directly to the private beach edge, are consistently among the strongest images from any Mahahual wedding day.
Sunrise ceremonies. Mahahual's northeast-facing beach makes it genuinely viable for sunrise ceremonies — the sun rises over the Caribbean. A ceremony timed to begin at dawn, with the first Caribbean light falling across the couple and the coral shallows catching the orange of the horizon — this is a visual experience and a photograph that the west-facing Hotel Zone beaches cannot produce.

Choose Mahahual if: You want the most authentically undeveloped Caribbean coastline in Mexico. You are comfortable with 3.5–4 hours of travel from Cancún. You want direct reef water access for photography. You want the lighthouse portrait location. You prefer smaller boutique beach clubs over established resort infrastructure. Distance and adventure are features, not obstacles.
