The Riviera Maya's Most
Decorated Wedding Photographer

I am Victor Herrera — a Cancun-based wedding photographer recognised among the Top 16 wedding photographers in the world by the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers (ISPWP). I have been photographing destination weddings across the full length of the Riviera Maya corridor for years, from the resort clusters of Puerto Morelos to the cenotes and boutique properties of Tulum.

The Riviera Maya is not a single destination — it is a visual universe. Within 130 kilometers of Caribbean coastline, you will find pristine white-sand beaches, ancient Maya ruins, primeval jungle canopy, crystal-clear underground cenotes, luxury resort architecture, and one of the most extraordinary qualities of tropical light anywhere in the world. No other wedding destination on the planet offers this visual range in such a compact geography.

I know this coastline the way a musician knows their instrument. I know which resort terraces face west for the best golden hour, which private cenotes produce the most cinematic light effects, and how the humidity changes the quality of the air between November and August. That knowledge is not a marketing claim — it is what every image in my portfolio reflects.

The Destination

Understanding the
Riviera Maya Corridor

km 0 — North

Cancun & Costa Mujeres

The most developed hub — home to Hyatt Ziva, Breathless, Planet Hollywood, Excellence Playa Mujeres, and Finest Playa Mujeres. Urban energy, major resort infrastructure.

km 30

Puerto Morelos

Quieter, more intimate zone. Known for smaller boutique properties and the beginning of the protected coral reef that runs the length of the coast.

km 68

Playa del Carmen & Mayakoba

The most cosmopolitan zone — Grand Hyatt, Rosewood, Banyan Tree, Fairmont, and the entire Mayakoba estate. Urban sophistication meets Caribbean luxury. See PDC page →

km 90

Akumal & Secrets Maroma

One of the most beautiful beach zones in the world. Secrets Maroma Beach sits on a pristine white-sand stretch with calm, crystal-clear water — extraordinary for beach ceremonies.

km 130 — South

Tulum

Bohemian, atmospheric, and increasingly luxury. Jungle settings, clifftop ocean views, and the most distinctive visual character in the entire corridor. See Tulum page →

Venue Expertise

The Resorts & Venues
Victor Knows Best

Deep knowledge of a specific venue changes the quality of your wedding photographs fundamentally. This is what years of photographing across the Riviera Maya produces.

Excellence Riviera Cancun
Adults-only · All-inclusive

The Pier Ceremony

Excellence's extended pier ceremony location — where couples walk the aisle literally over the Caribbean Sea — produces ceremony photographs of extraordinary drama. I know the exact lighting conditions at this pier from 3pm through sunset.

Portrait Windows

The 4:30–5:45 PM window at Excellence consistently produces the most beautiful results. The Spanish colonial-inspired architecture turns amber and creates portrait backgrounds that rival any dedicated studio environment.

Rosewood Mayakoba
Eco-luxury · Private lagoons

Jungle & Lagoon Settings

Built within a protected nature reserve, Rosewood moves through freshwater canals, mangrove lagoons, and tropical gardens. Portrait photography here has a visual richness impossible to replicate anywhere else in the Riviera Maya.

Why It Photographs Differently

The layered jungle canopy creates dappled, cinematic light that no artificial setup can mimic. The lagoon reflections at golden hour produce images that genuinely look like film stills. One of the most photogenically extraordinary venues in Mexico.

Secrets Maroma Beach
Beachfront · World-class sand

The Beach Itself

Maroma Beach is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world — pristine white sand, calm turquoise water, and minimal visual clutter. Beach portraits here look effortlessly refined framed by sky and sea rather than visual distractions.

Ceremony Locations

The beachfront ceremony setup at Secrets Maroma produces some of the most photographically clean destination wedding images in all of Mexico. The combination of the beach quality and Caribbean light at this latitude is genuinely unique.

Finest Playa Mujeres
Contemporary · Family-friendly luxury

Architectural Sophistication

Finest's clean contemporary design, multiple infinity pools, and extensive beach frontage create a visual environment that photographs with elegance and modern depth. One of the most architecturally distinctive resorts in the northern corridor.

Event Logistics

Finest is known for highly organized event infrastructure, which makes the wedding day flow smoothly. That reliability reduces timeline stress and protects the photography windows that matter most.

Dreams Portfolio
Dreams Riviera · Jade · Sapphire · Natura

Multiple Properties

The Dreams properties throughout the Riviera Maya corridor each offer multiple outdoor ceremony locations with beautiful Caribbean backdrops and reliable event infrastructure. I have photographed extensively at several Dreams properties and know each layout well.

El Dorado Casitas

The casitas concept creates a wedding atmosphere that feels private, warm, and deeply luxurious. The thatched-roof architecture, tropical gardens, and adults-only ambiance produce photographs with an intimacy and romance that larger resorts cannot replicate.

Unique to This Region

Cenote Photography —
The Riviera Maya's Greatest Visual Secret

One of the most extraordinary photography opportunities unique to this region is the cenote — a natural freshwater sinkhole formed by the collapse of underground cave ceilings. The Yucatan Peninsula sits above one of the world's largest underground river systems, and the Riviera Maya corridor is dotted with cenotes ranging from open-sky swimming holes to dramatic underground cave systems with cathedral-like interiors.

For wedding photography, the interior sections of certain cenotes create genuinely cinematic light effects — shafts of sunlight falling through openings onto turquoise water, producing the kind of visual drama that looks almost unreal. This is not a special effect. In the Riviera Maya, it is simply part of the landscape.

"In no other wedding destination in the world can you photograph on a white-sand beach, inside an ancient underground cave, and at a five-star resort — all within one hour of each other."

I work with specific private cenotes that permit photography and provide controlled access. A cenote session can be incorporated into your wedding day or arranged as a separate adventure session before or after the wedding. The results are consistently among the most distinctive and unforgettable images from any Riviera Maya wedding package.

Cenote Sessions

"The underground light is something I have never been able to replicate anywhere else in 11 years of destination photography."

Cenote sessions typically run 60–90 minutes and can be scheduled as part of full-day wedding coverage or as a standalone pre-wedding or post-wedding adventure.

I work with private cenotes that provide exclusive access, controlled environments, and the most extraordinary light conditions available anywhere in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Available throughout the Riviera Maya corridor — from Puerto Morelos cenotes to the extraordinary underground systems near Tulum.

Advice for Future Brides

6 Things Every Bride Should Know
Before Planning in Riviera Maya

From years of photographing destination weddings across the full Riviera Maya corridor — the things that actually make a difference to your images.

01

The Light Changes Dramatically by Season

The quality of golden-hour light in December is different from August. In peak season, the light is warm and directional. In summer, rain creates extraordinary atmospheric effects immediately after showers. There is no bad season for Riviera Maya wedding photography — only photographers who know how to read whichever light they're given.

02

Venue Knowledge Is Not Optional at This Level

Every Riviera Maya resort has photographic opportunities that a visiting photographer will miss on their first wedding there. Ask specifically which properties your photographer has worked at — not whether they have shot "in the Riviera Maya." Excellence, Rosewood, and Secrets Maroma are completely different environments. Experience at one does not transfer to another.

03

Add a Cenote to Your Day — Non-Negotiable

The cenotes of the Yucatan are within 20–40 minutes of every major Riviera Maya resort. No other wedding destination in the world offers anything comparable. A 60-minute cenote session adds a visual dimension to your gallery that guests will talk about for years. If your photographer does not offer this, find one who does.

04

Golden Hour Is a Timeline Decision, Not a Luck Decision

The difference between adequate and extraordinary portraits in the Riviera Maya is almost always the timing of your couple session. The 45-minute window before sunset is where the magic happens. Protect it in your timeline. Build everything else around it. A good photographer will insist on this with you.

05

Book 12–18 Months Out Minimum

The Riviera Maya is one of the world's most popular destination wedding regions. The best photographers fill their calendars early — especially for November through April. Your photographer should be the first vendor you book, not the last. They can help you evaluate venues and vendors from their years of experience in the region.

06

Zero Travel Fees Within the Corridor

Many photographers charge travel fees for any venue outside Cancun's hotel zone. I cover the full 130-kilometer Riviera Maya corridor without travel fees — from Costa Mujeres in the north to Tulum in the south. Your location should never be a cost variable. Make sure you understand your photographer's travel policy before signing.

Investment

What Does a Riviera Maya
Wedding Photographer Cost in 2026?

Riviera Maya wedding photography in 2026 generally ranges from approximately $2,000 to $8,000+ USD for full-day coverage, depending on experience, international recognition, and service level.

Award-recognized photographers — those with verifiable ISPWP, WPJA, or equivalent credentials — typically work in the $4,000 to $7,000+ range. This tier reflects not just technical skill but years of venue-specific experience, editorial vision, and the professional infrastructure required to deliver consistently extraordinary results.

The question worth asking is not "What does it cost?" but "What am I paying for?" A wedding photographer who charges $1,500 and delivers adequate images is not the same as one charging $5,000 who delivers images you will treasure for the rest of your life. Your photographs are the only investment from your wedding day that actually grows in value over time.

Cancun is more urban and concentrated, with the largest all-inclusive resort infrastructure in Mexico. The Riviera Maya is more spread out, more varied, and more integrated with nature — offering access to jungle settings, cenotes, quieter beaches, and a wider range of boutique properties. Riviera Maya weddings typically offer more visual diversity for photography. See my dedicated Playa del Carmen and Tulum pages for more.

January, February, and March are widely considered the best months — dry season, low humidity, and consistently beautiful golden-hour light. November and December are also excellent. The summer months (June–September) bring more dramatic skies and lush vegetation that creates extraordinary backgrounds. There is genuinely no bad month for Riviera Maya wedding photography — only photographers who know how to read the conditions they're given.

Yes. After years of working across this region, I can recommend trusted wedding planners, florists, officiants, videographers, and other vendors throughout the Riviera Maya corridor. These are professionals I have worked alongside directly — not generic referrals. Ask me when we connect.
