Robin & Kira’s Cenote Suytun Proposal with Mariachi

She suspected the question. She never expected the music.

A photo session with a secret

Robin and Kira’s proposal at Cenote Suytun began as a couple’s photo session. Behind the scenes, we had coordinated a signal for Robin to kneel and an entrance for the mariachi musicians. After Kira said yes, the music became a second surprise, and their celebration continued outdoors.

I arrived about thirty minutes before the couple. That gave us time to speak with the Suytun team, check the arrangements and make sure the permissions for this session were in place. With a surprise like this, the photographs depend on a few quiet conversations happening before anyone steps in front of the camera.

When the mariachi arrived, I coordinated the cue with Sara: the musicians would come in as Robin knelt. They needed to stay out of sight until then. When we realized the couple had arrived, we asked the musicians to hide again. There were nerves behind the scenes, even before we had taken the first photograph.

Down into the cave, then the question

I introduced myself to Robin and Kira, and we went down into the cenote. We began with a normal photo session: standing together, holding hands and moving naturally on the platform. The photographs show the warm limestone walls, their reflections in the water and the scale of the cave around them.

Then I gave Robin the signal. He knelt, Kira turned toward him, and she said yes.

Later, Kira told us she had suspected the proposal was coming. That made what happened next even more special: there was still a surprise she had not seen coming.

The surprise she did not expect: mariachi

The mariachi was the unexpected part. As the musicians joined the celebration, Kira’s reaction changed again. She cried, Robin held her close, and the photographs became about the emotion between them.

In one of my favorite sequences, she brings her hand to her face while Robin embraces her. In the next part of the story, the musicians are there beside the cenote stairs. Together, those images preserve both the reaction and the people who helped create it.

That is what I wanted to remember from their session: the question, the yes, and then the moment the music made everything feel different.

One more dance, outside under the lights

After photographing inside the cenote, we went outdoors. There was more room for Robin and Kira to enjoy the musicians and move together.

Under the string lights, they danced while the mariachi played around them. The setting had changed completely: from the enclosed cave and reflected light to an open space, music and movement. We made the final photographs there, including Kira showing her engagement ring.

Their gallery ends with that feeling of celebration. The proposal had happened; now they could enjoy being engaged.

A note for couples inspired by their story

The mariachi entrance worked because it was coordinated around this particular session. If you are imagining something similar, photography access, musicians and any private arrangements need to be discussed with the venue for your date.

Questions about Robin & Kira’s proposal

Was the mariachi part of Robin and Kira’s surprise proposal?

Yes. The musicians stayed out of sight before Robin and Kira arrived. We coordinated their entrance with the proposal so the music would become a second surprise.

Did Kira know Robin was going to propose?

Afterward, Kira told us she had suspected the proposal. The mariachi was the part she had not expected.

Did the whole celebration take place inside the cenote?

No. We photographed inside Cenote Suytun, then went outdoors, where Robin and Kira could enjoy the mariachi and dance with more room.

Can another couple plan a mariachi proposal at Suytun?

Robin and Kira’s session shows one arrangement we coordinated with the venue. Music, photography access and any private arrangements must be confirmed with the Suytun team for your date; this story is not a guarantee of permission or availability.
