At Víctor Herrera Photography, every couple is photographed with the same approach, the same care, and the same professional commitment — regardless of gender, orientation, nationality, religion, or cultural background. This page exists because LGBTQ+ couples deserve to find a photographer who is unambiguously, enthusiastically on their side. If you are planning a gay wedding, lesbian wedding, or any same-sex destination wedding in Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum or the Riviera Maya — you are in the right place.
Planning a destination wedding as an LGBTQ+ couple involves everything a heterosexual destination wedding involves — plus some additional considerations: which resorts are genuinely welcoming vs. performatively so, whether your legal ceremony is possible or practical in Mexico, which officiants are truly affirming, and whether your photographer will see your relationship the way you actually live it.
I am Víctor Herrera, ISPWP Top 16 World wedding photographer based in Cancún. I have photographed love stories from many countries, cultures, and backgrounds across the Riviera Maya — and the best of what I do has never had anything to do with the gender of the people in the frame. It has to do with light, emotion, honesty, and the ability to disappear long enough for the real moments to happen.
What follows is a real gay wedding — Christian and Antoine — photographed in the Riviera Maya with the same approach I bring to every celebration I document.

Christian & Antoine — A Love Story in the Mexican Caribbean
Christian and Antoine chose the Riviera Maya for reasons that had nothing to do with it being a "gay-friendly destination" — though it is. They chose it because the Caribbean is extraordinary, because a destination wedding creates a shared adventure for everyone who attends, and because the photographs they had seen from this coast spoke to them.
What made their wedding day what it was had everything to do with who they are: two people who love each other with elegance and warmth, surrounded by family and friends who crossed oceans and time zones to be there. The Mexican Caribbean was the backdrop. The story was theirs.

Getting Ready — Where the Day Really Starts
The getting-ready hours of any wedding are where I find some of the most honest photographs of the day. The rituals of getting dressed — the care taken with every detail, the conversations between a groom and his father, the jokes that break the nerves, the quiet moments of reflection — all of it happens in these hours, and all of it tells the real story.
At Christian and Antoine's wedding, the getting-ready was filled with family. Parents who had traveled to be there. Friends who had known them for years. The love in those rooms was not about anyone's gender — it was about people who matter to each other, showing up.

The Venue — Acamara Weddings, Riviera Maya
Christian and Antoine chose Acamara Weddings — a dedicated event venue in the Riviera Maya known for its beachfront ceremony spaces, personalized service, and the quality of natural light it provides throughout the day. The venue combines the intimacy of a private celebration with the visual power of the Caribbean coast.

The Ceremony — Two Men, the Caribbean, and Everyone Who Came to Witness

There is a moment in every wedding ceremony when the room — or in this case, the beach — goes still. When the officiant says the words that have been said at every wedding in every culture across human history, and the couple looks at each other, and everyone around them holds their breath. That moment is the same for every couple. The love is the same. The weight of the commitment is the same. The photographs of that moment look the same: extraordinary.

Is Mexico LGBTQ+ Friendly for Destination Weddings?
🏳️🌈 Legal status — what you need to know
Same-sex marriage has been fully legal across all Mexican states since 2022, following a series of Supreme Court rulings. Mexico was among the first countries in Latin America to achieve nationwide legalization. As an international couple, you can legally marry in Mexico and have the marriage recognized in many countries internationally.
Most LGBTQ+ destination couples in Cancún and the Riviera Maya choose a symbolic ceremony on-site and handle legal formalities at home — the same practical approach taken by most international heterosexual couples. This eliminates paperwork, translation requirements, and the 4-day pre-arrival requirement for civil ceremonies. The symbolic ceremony is meaningful, officiated by a celebrant of your choice, and produces the same beautiful photographs.
I can connect you with trusted LGBTQ+-affirming officiants in Cancún and the Riviera Maya who have experience with same-sex ceremonies of all types.
Which Resorts Are Genuinely LGBTQ+ Welcoming?
Most major resort brands in Cancún and the Riviera Maya explicitly welcome same-sex couples. When booking, the key is to confirm directly — not just that same-sex weddings are "allowed," but that the resort has experience hosting them and that the staff is genuinely prepared to serve your celebration with the same respect as any other.
Secrets The Vine Cancun
Adults-only, contemporary, wine-themed. Explicitly LGBTQ+ welcoming. Strong for intimate gay weddings and elopements.
Dreams Riviera Cancun
Family-friendly, 9 venues including the iconic diamond gazebo. Very welcoming and experienced with same-sex celebrations.
Dreams Vista Cancun
Family-friendly, Ocean Deck Palapa over the water. AMResorts brand has strong LGBTQ+ welcoming policy across all properties.
Atelier Playa Mujeres
Luxury adults-adjacent (16+), one wedding per day. Handmade Weddings philosophy applies equally to all couples. Confirm staff experience directly.
Presidente InterContinental
Best beach in Cancún, ceremonies until 1am. InterContinental Hotels Group has a global LGBTQ+ inclusion policy.
Private Venues
Acamara Weddings and other boutique Riviera Maya venues offer a more private, personalized experience — ideal for couples seeking intimacy over resort scale.
What to ask every resort before booking
Ask directly: "Have you hosted same-sex ceremonies before? Can you connect me with a couple who has celebrated here?" A resort that has real experience will answer comfortably and specifically. One that hasn't may fumble. That answer tells you everything you need to know.
What to Look for in an LGBTQ+ Wedding Photographer
A good LGBTQ+ wedding photographer brings three things beyond technical skill. First, complete comfort — the photographer should photograph your relationship exactly as it is, without awkwardness, without imposing heteronormative posing templates, and without making you feel like you need to perform for the camera in any direction.
Second, experience with the emotional specifics. Same-sex destination weddings often have additional emotional layers — family members who have traveled a long journey (literally and figuratively) to be there, moments where acceptance and love are expressed in ways that require a photographer who recognizes and anticipates them.
Third, a visual approach that serves your story. The best LGBTQ+ wedding photography does not announce itself as LGBTQ+ wedding photography. It announces itself as extraordinary wedding photography — of two people, in love, in an extraordinary place.
